Reskilling and Upskilling: adapting and updating at work
Career

Since 2020, we have experienced significant changes around the world, including new work models. A global survey conducted by McKinsey reveals that 69% of respondents are now more focused on developing their teams' skills than before the pandemic. In addition, the acceleration brought about by digital transformation has driven companies to intensify their actions aimed at reskilling and upskilling their employees.
Reskilling and Upskilling
Reskilling and upskilling are terms used to describe processes of learning and developing skills in a specific field of work.
Reskilling refers to acquiring new skills to perform a new role or function, while upskilling refers to enhancing existing skills to stay up to date in a specific field.
Both processes are important for personal and professional development, to remain competitive in an ever-evolving job market.
S/S/S Method for Skills Management
To assist companies in this skills management process, consulting firm McKinsey developed the S/S/S method, which consists of three stages: "Select, Synthesize, and Scale" (or Sustain). These stages are essential to ensure that employee training is effective and delivers results for the company.
Select
In the Select stage, the company must identify which skills are essential for the organization's success and what the existing gaps are within the team. It is important to consider current and future market demands, as well as the company's needs in terms of innovation and competitiveness.
Synthesize
In the Synthesize stage, the company must define how employee training will be carried out, taking into account available time, budget, and the preferences of the professionals themselves. It is important to choose the best training formats, which may include in-person courses, online courses, workshops, mentoring, and others.
Sustain
Concluding with the Sustain stage, the company must ensure that the training is effective and brings results to the organization. This includes periodically evaluating training results and adjusting the training plan if necessary, to ensure that the skills acquired by employees are being applied on the job and delivering results for the company.
The S/S/S method developed by McKinsey is an excellent tool to help companies manage skills and train their employees. By following this method, companies can identify the essential skills for organizational success, define how training will be conducted, and ensure that the training is effective and yields results for the company.
