CBDC: innovation brings blockchain into people's everyday lives

Blockchain

Technological innovations continue to reshape our world, and the financial sector is no exception. A notable development is the introduction of Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDC), which are digital forms of fiat currencies issued by central banks that use blockchain technology and are playing an increasingly relevant role in our daily lives.

Understand CBDC

A CBDC is a digital form of fiat currency issued by a central bank. Unlike decentralized cryptocurrencies, a CBDC is issued and regulated by government monetary authorities. It will combine the benefits of digital currency with the stability and trust associated with government-issued currencies. A CBDC can be used as a digital alternative to cash, offering greater transaction efficiency and broader financial inclusion.

Blockchain is widely associated with cryptocurrencies, but its application goes far beyond that. As financial institutions and governments explore CBDCs, blockchain becomes a foundational technology. This technology provides security, transparency, and efficiency, which is essential for the reliable and secure operation of a CBDC.

Advantages of CBDC

Blockchain can help ensure transaction integrity, trace payment history, and prevent the duplication or counterfeiting of digital currencies. Here are some benefits:

Transaction efficiency:

The use of blockchain in a CBDC can streamline financial transactions, reducing intermediaries and processing times. This can lead to faster payments, reduced costs, and greater accessibility.

Financial inclusion:

A CBDC can help include unbanked or underbanked populations, allowing them to access basic financial services through digital devices. Blockchain can ensure the security of these transactions and the integrity of records.

Transparency and combating corruption:

Blockchain offers a public and immutable ledger of transactions, which can increase transparency and help combat financial crimes. It enables real-time auditing and traceability of transactions, strengthening trust in financial operations.

Security and privacy:

Blockchain can provide an additional layer of security for the CBDC, protecting user data and hindering cyberattacks. In addition, the technology enables the use of cryptography to ensure transaction privacy.

CBDCs are in development and testing phases across several regions of the world. Currently, nearly 120 countries, including Brazil. The Central Bank of Brazil has been working since 2020 on developing the CBDC, which will initially be used between banks.

CBDC and Blockchain

As this form of digital currency becomes a reality, blockchain will play a crucial role in its implementation and large-scale adoption. It is anticipated that the use of blockchain-based CBDCs will expand to sectors beyond financial transactions, such as digital identity issuance, property registries, and much more.

CBDC and blockchain are converging to bring significant transformations to the financial system and people's daily lives. With the evolution of this technology, it is important to stay attentive to the opportunities and challenges it brings, preparing ourselves for a future where blockchain will become increasingly present in our lives.

BBChain launches testing platform with the same technology as the Real Digital

BBChain, a blockchain technology startup focused on the enterprise market and one of the companies invested in by Pitang, launched the BBChain Sandbox on Hyperledger BESU, a platform that allows companies to experience the same technology used in the pilot project of the Real Digital, the Brazilian digital currency. Thus, companies that were left out of the digital currency pilot will be able to conduct their own tests of use cases for tokenization technology.
