| Porto Digital
Porto Digital (literally, “ Digital Port ”) was created in Recife in the year 2000 with the objective of transforming the city and the state of Pernambuco into a center for technological entrepreneurialism and expertise. The initiative includes contributions from the public sector, private initiatives and academic institutions, bringing together more than 90 institutions (a number that keeps growing), among them IT and specialized service companies and agencies interested in stimulating local development through ICT investment.
Four multinationals and two technological centers are currently installed in Porto Digital in an area spanning 100 hectares within the historic ‘Old Recife' neighborhood. Among the government incentives linked to Porto are ordinances which offers financial incentives to companies in the hub and a reduction of up to 60% in their taxes.
In five years of operation Porto Digital has generated roughly 2,500 jobs and helped Pernambuco state become the largest center for technological innovation in Brazil. Among its various specialties in ICT are: management systems for financial, health, transport and security institutions; solutions for developing portals; and the development of games and applications for mobile handsets.
